How to Give a Nuru Massage at Home: Step-by-Step Guide for Couples

Prep, technique, aftercare, and the mistakes that make first-timers never try it again. The practical version, in six steps.

There's a reason most "how to give a Nuru massage" guides feel like they're missing something. They tell you what Nuru is, then jump to "be creative." This guide doesn't do that. By the end, you'll know exactly how to set up the room, mix the gel, use your body, and clean up after, with no guessing in between.

If you're new to Nuru, start with What Is Nuru Massage? for the background. Otherwise, let's get into it.

Before You Start: 30-Minute Prep

Set yourselves up properly and the actual massage looks after itself.

Set the room

  • Bump the temperature up by 2-3 degrees. Cold rooms ruin the experience.
  • Dim the lights or use lamps. Overhead lighting is too clinical.
  • Move anything fragile away from the bed.
  • Make sure the path to the bathroom is clear and free of slip hazards.

Lay the surface

  • Put your waterproof Nuru sheet over your mattress, or on the floor if you'd rather work flat.
  • If you're using an inflatable Nuru mat, inflate it now and place it on top.
  • Put a folded towel at the head of the sheet for comfort.
  • Keep two more towels nearby for after.

Prep the gel

If you're using a gel powder, the four-step mixing sequence is the same every time:

Step 1 — pour warm water into the mixing bowl

Step 1 · Pour warm water into the bowl

Step 2 — add the powder using the supplied scoop

Step 2 · Add the powder

Step 3 — stir gently and let the powder hydrate

Step 3 · Stir and let it hydrate

Step 4 — the finished gel, ready to pour

Step 4 · Your gel is ready

  • For powder: follow the ratio on the pack. As a starting point, 40g of Nuru gel powder mixes into around 4 litres of warm water. Stir slowly for 1-2 minutes; lumps will sort themselves out as the powder hydrates.
  • For pre-mixed liquid gel: warm the bottle by sitting it in a sink of hot water for 5-10 minutes.
  • Aim for body temperature. Cold gel is the single biggest mistake first-timers make.

Get yourselves ready

  • Both of you take a warm shower. Wash off the day, the gym, any other lotions or oils.
  • Skip moisturisers and perfumes. They'll fight the gel.
  • Dry off lightly. Slightly damp skin grips the gel beautifully.

The Massage: Step-by-Step

Read it once, then put it down and feel your way through it.

Step 1 · 5 min

Pour and Coat

Have your partner lie face down. Pour a generous amount of warm gel onto their back, shoulders, and the backs of their thighs. Don't be stingy. Nuru works better with too much gel than too little.

Coat your own body next: chest, stomach, thighs, forearms. Work it in for thirty seconds so the gel warms with your body heat.

First Contact

Start kneeling beside your partner. Rest your forearms across their lower back and slowly slide them up toward the shoulders. The first slide is usually the moment everything makes sense.

Try these early movements:

  • Forearm slide from lower back to shoulders, then back down
  • Open palm sweep across the shoulder blades
  • Long slow drags down the spine using the heel of your hand

Keep the pressure even. You're not trying to dig into knots; you're spreading sensation.

Step 3 · 10-15 min

Body-to-Body

This is the part Nuru is famous for. Lie down on top of your partner, supporting some of your weight on your forearms or knees so they aren't crushed.

Slide upward, then back down, in long slow movements. Use:

  • Your forearms to support your weight
  • Your chest and stomach to glide
  • Your hips for full-length contact
  • Your knees beside their thighs for stability

Vary the angle. Slide diagonally across them. Slide head-to-toe and toe-to-head. There's no choreography to memorise; the gel does most of the work.

Step 4 · 5 min

The Flip

When you've covered the back, ask your partner to roll over. Pour fresh gel across their chest, stomach, and thighs.

The front-side massage is more eye-contact heavy, so slow it down further. Maintain steady, full-body contact. Front-to-front is more emotionally intense than back-to-back; let that intensity be part of the experience.

Switch

Most couples switch roles at some point. The receiver becomes the giver. The giver gets to feel what they were just doing to their partner. If you've never been on the receiving end of a Nuru massage, switch at least once. The view from the other side changes how you give the next time.

Step 6 · 5 min

Wind Down

Let the last few minutes be still. Lie chest-to-back, breathe in sync, and let the warmth do its job. The wind-down is what gives Nuru its sleep-like aftermath, and most couples agree it's the best part.

Aftercare and Cleanup

This is the part most guides skip. It's also the part that decides whether you'll do it again.

The shower

Step carefully out of the bed and into the shower together. Use warm water and your hands to rinse the gel off. It comes off cleanly without soap. If you want to use soap, pick something gentle and unscented.

The sheet

Rinse the waterproof sheet under the shower while you're in there, or wipe it down with a warm wet cloth and hang it over the edge of the bath to dry. It'll be ready for next time within the hour.

The room

Dry the floor where you might have dripped. Open a window for a few minutes to clear the humidity.

Yourselves

Wrap up in clean towels, drink a glass of water each, and settle in. The post-Nuru hour is one of the best parts. Don't rush it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Cold gel. Warm the gel or warm the room. Pick one. Both is better.
  2. Not enough gel. If you feel friction, you need more. Keep a bowl nearby for top-ups.
  3. Going too fast. Nuru rewards slow. Cut your speed in half, then halve it again.
  4. Trying advanced moves the first time. Stick to long forearm slides and full-body glides. The fancy stuff comes later.
  5. Skipping the shower at the start. Old lotions, perfumes, and gym sweat fight with the gel and the experience.
  6. Forgetting cleanup. Set the towels and shower up before you start. Sorting it out at the end kills the mood.

What You'll Need (in One Place)

Once you've done it once, you'll have your own version. Some couples like a thicker gel mix, others prefer it slightly thinner. Some warm the gel; others warm the room. There's no single correct answer; there's only what works for the two of you.
